Becoming a team leader is one of the biggest steps in any career. Often it happens to people who were good at the job and are then asked to lead the people who do it. The skills that made you a strong team member, however, are not the same skills that make a strong team leader. Suddenly your success depends not on what you can do yourself, but on what you can help others to do — on motivating, organising, supporting and developing a group of people so that together they achieve more than any of them could alone.

Team leading sits at the very front line of management. As a team leader, supervisor or first-line manager you are the crucial bridge between the people who set the direction of an organisation and the people who deliver it day to day. You translate goals into tasks, pass information up and down, set the tone of the team, deal with problems as they arise, and represent your team to the rest of the business. Research consistently shows that the immediate line manager has more impact on how people feel about their work than almost any other factor.
