About this course.

Supervision is one of the most powerful tools available for keeping care safe, developing staff and supporting the people who deliver it. At its simplest, supervision is a regular, planned, accountable process between a supervisor and a worker that exists to support, develop and monitor practice. It is not a quick chat in a corridor or an annual form-filling exercise; it is a protected, two-way conversation that happens often enough to make a real difference. Done well, supervision helps workers feel valued and supported, keeps practice safe and consistent, and gives managers an accurate picture of how care is really being delivered.

This course explains what supervision is and why it matters in health and social care, where the expectation for it comes from, and how to make it genuinely effective rather than a box-ticking ritual. It explores the three classic functions of supervision — managerial, educational and supportive — and the different types you might use, from one-to-one and group sessions to peer and clinical supervision, and the practical building blocks of good supervision: a supervision agreement, protected time, a prepared agenda, accurate confidential records, and a safe, reflective space. It also covers reflective practice and the Gibbs cycle, giving and receiving feedback, setting objectives, and the links between supervision, safeguarding, wellbeing and quality of care. It concludes with a 20-question multiple-choice assessment, which you must pass at 80% to earn your CPD certificate.
