A seizure can be a frightening thing to witness, yet seizures are far more common than many people realise, and the calm, simple actions of the person nearby can make a real difference. Helping someone during a seizure rarely requires special equipment or medical training — it mostly requires you to stay calm, protect the person from injury, know a few clear do’s and don’ts, and recognise the small number of situations where you must call for an ambulance.
This course takes a deliberately broad view. Many people assume seizures only happen to people with epilepsy, but a seizure is a sudden burst of abnormal electrical activity in the brain that can be triggered by many things — a high fever in a young child, very low blood sugar, a head injury, a stroke, an infection, or alcohol or drug withdrawal — and some are not caused by electrical changes at all. You will learn what a seizure is and its causes, the different types and what each looks like, exactly what to do and never to do, when to call 999, how to record a seizure and the role of individual care plans.
