This course raises awareness of the risks from noise at work and how to control them. Loud noise at work can cause permanent and disabling hearing damage, including noise-induced hearing loss and tinnitus. This damage is preventable, but once it has happened it cannot be reversed. Thousands of workers across the United Kingdom live with hearing problems caused by past exposure to noise at work — in construction, manufacturing, engineering, foundries, agriculture, woodworking, quarrying, entertainment and many other sectors. The course explains what noise is and how it is measured, the law and the duties it places on employers and workers, where workplace noise comes from, its effects on health, how the risk is assessed and how daily exposure is estimated, and how noise is eliminated or controlled — working through the hierarchy of control, with hearing protection treated as a last resort rather than a first response.
It also covers hearing protection zones, how protectors are selected using SNR and HML data, and the role of health surveillance. It is written for workers who are exposed to noise and for the managers, supervisors and duty holders responsible for protecting them. By the end you will understand your own responsibilities, recognise when noise is likely to be a problem, and know what good noise control looks like in practice. The content reflects the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 and current HSE guidance, including the approved code of practice and guidance L108.

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 set action values for daily noise exposure: at 80 dB(A) employers must provide information and hearing protection on request, and at 85 dB(A) protection becomes mandatory and exposure must be reduced. This course explains those thresholds, how noise damages hearing permanently, and the controls that protect it.
