OVERVIEW

About this course.

Schools are one of the most important settings in any child or young person's life, and the adults who work in them are often among the first to notice when something is not right. Around one in five children and young people in the UK now has a probable mental health condition, and teachers, teaching assistants and other education staff, while not expected to be mental health professionals, are uniquely placed to spot the early signs, be a steady and trusted presence, and make sure pupils get the right help at the right time.

This course gives education staff a clear, supportive grounding in mental health awareness. It explains mental health as a continuum, why school matters so much for wellbeing, and how the Department for Education's whole-school approach — built on eight principles and co-ordinated by a Senior Mental Health Lead — works in practice. It covers common difficulties in pupils, how to recognise the signs, the central importance of relationships and belonging, the crucial overlap with safeguarding, and how to respond carefully when a pupil discloses self-harm or thoughts of suicide. Crucially, it also covers staff wellbeing, workload, the employer's duty and peer support — because looking after your own mental health matters too.
