Mental Health Awareness for Managers

About this course.

This course helps managers understand mental health, reduce stigma, and support the wellbeing of their teams. Managers play a vital role: they are often the first to notice when someone is struggling and have the influence to create a healthy, supportive working environment. The aim is not to turn managers into clinicians, but to give them the confidence, knowledge and practical skills to respond well — early, fairly and humanely. The course explains what mental health is, the law, common types of mental health problem, how individuals can look after their own wellbeing, and — importantly — the manager's role: assessing risk, promoting wellbeing, having supportive conversations, supporting someone with a mental health problem, making reasonable adjustments, and managing sickness absence and return to work. Throughout, you will find realistic manager scenarios, worked examples, conversation frameworks and reference tables you can apply immediately in your team.

This is awareness-level training. It builds knowledge and confidence but does not qualify you to diagnose, treat or counsel. It complements — and never replaces — professional support such as occupational health, Employee Assistance Programmes, GPs and specialist mental health services. Where this course refers to suicide or self-harm it does so carefully and without detail, focusing only on how to respond supportively and where to direct people for help.
