This course raises awareness of the risks of manual handling and the practical steps to reduce them. Manual handling injuries — especially to the back — are among the most common causes of work-related ill health and lost working time in Great Britain, yet the great majority are preventable through better planning, equipment and technique. The course explains what manual handling is, the legal framework, the injuries it can cause and why they matter, and the law's central ‘avoid, assess, reduce’ approach.
It works through how to assess a manual handling task using the TILE/LITE factors, how the HSE risk filters and the MAC tool support that assessment, how to apply good lifting technique step by step, and how to use team handling and handling aids safely. It is written for a UK workplace and is grounded throughout in the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (as amended) and the HSE's published guidance. Worked examples, comparison tables and a structured assessment are included so that the learning is practical and can be applied straight away.

Anyone whose work involves lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling loads — warehouse, delivery, construction, care, retail, office moves — and the managers responsible for assessing that work.
The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 set a clear hierarchy: avoid hazardous manual handling where reasonably practicable, assess what cannot be avoided, and reduce the risk. This course covers that hierarchy, how lifting injures the back, and safer technique using the LITE assessment (Load, Individual, Task, Environment).
This is an awareness-level course. High-risk or specialist handling — patient moving, mechanical lifting equipment — needs task-specific practical training on top.
