OVERVIEW

About this course.

This course provides awareness of extremism and radicalisation so that proportionate steps can be taken to help prevent vulnerable people from being drawn into terrorism. Radicalisation is treated throughout as a safeguarding issue: protecting people at risk is part of the wider duty to keep everyone safe from harm, in the same way that organisations safeguard against neglect, abuse and other forms of exploitation. The course explains the key terms and how they relate to one another, the legal framework under the Counter- Terrorism and Security Act 2015, and where Prevent sits within the Government's overall counter-terrorism strategy, CONTEST. It then examines radicalisation as a process rather than a single event, the push and pull factors that can make a person vulnerable, the role of the internet and online spaces, and the possible signs that someone may be being drawn in.

Finally, the course sets out exactly what to do with a concern: how to record it, who to tell, how a Prevent referral is made, and how the multi-agency Channel programme assesses and supports people. It closes with sector-specific duties and realistic scenarios. The emphasis throughout is on a calm, measured, evidence- based and non-discriminatory approach that avoids stereotyping any community, faith or group.
