OVERVIEW

About this course.

This course provides a thorough awareness of confined spaces so that you understand your legal responsibilities and how to work safely. Confined spaces continue to kill and seriously injure workers in the UK every year — across sewers and water treatment works, agriculture, manufacturing, construction, shipbuilding and utilities. A recurring and tragic feature of these incidents is that a significant proportion of the dead are not the original entrant but would-be rescuers who entered without the correct equipment or training and were overcome by the very same hazard. The course explains what a confined space is in law, the legislation that applies, the specified risks and the wider physical hazards, how to carry out a suitable and sufficient risk assessment, how to develop and follow a safe system of work, when a permit to work is needed and what it contains, the emergency and rescue arrangements that must be in place before entry, the principles of atmosphere testing and continuous monitoring, and the plant and equipment involved including respiratory protective equipment (RPE).

It is an awareness-level course. It builds the underpinning knowledge that everyone working in or near confined spaces — and the supervisors and managers who plan and authorise that work — must hold. It does NOT, on its own, make you competent to enter a confined space. Competence for entry requires additional task-specific and equipment-specific training, supervised practice, and (for many entries) accredited training mapped to the National Occupational Standards and assessed against the confined space risk classification (low, medium or high risk).

COURSE DETAILS

Who it’s for, and the law behind it.

Workers, supervisors and duty holders who may encounter confined spaces — tanks, chambers, silos, sewers, ducts — and need to recognise the dangers and the legal controls before any entry is considered.

The Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 require employers to avoid confined-space entry where possible, and otherwise to work to a safe system with emergency arrangements in place before anyone enters. This course teaches you to recognise a confined space, its hazards — toxic and flammable atmospheres, oxygen deficiency, engulfment — and how the permit-to-work system controls entry.
