About this course.

Bipolar disorder is a long-term mental health condition that affects a person’s mood, energy and ability to function. It is characterised by episodes in which mood swings far higher than usual — known as mania or hypomania — and episodes of depression, in which mood and energy fall very low. Between these episodes many people experience periods of stability where their mood is balanced and they live full, active lives. Bipolar disorder is more than ordinary ups and downs: the changes in mood are more intense, last longer and have a real effect on how a person thinks, feels and behaves. Crucially, it is a manageable condition. With the right treatment and support, most people with bipolar disorder live well.

The course covers the mood spectrum, the difference between mania, hypomania and depression, the types of bipolar disorder (Bipolar I, Bipolar II and cyclothymia), prevalence, myths and stigma, the signs of manic and depressive episodes, mixed states, triggers and early warning signs of relapse, medication at awareness level (mood stabilisers, antipsychotics, antidepressants), talking therapies, self-management and staying well plans, and how to offer person-centred, non-judgemental support in care, education and workplace settings.
